He was working then in a high security secret location in leafy Reigate (Surrey) when it was announced that the function he managed was transferring to Preston in Lancashire. He chose home and went to the customer service department of shower company called Aqualisa (short-lived but fun) and trotting through a variety of different jobs - from home help, kitchen porter, carpet salesman to fork lift driver before heading off to work for BT on an internal supply helpdesk first in Surrey.ġ994 - Let's halt the story there - BT was the start of what you might call a career which saw Derek move into management. To train to be a live-in silver service waiter in somewhere called Hook in Hampshire (sounded scary) or to stay in his home town, Westerham in Kent. It took a while.ġ989 Leaving school with not many (any) letters before or after his name, his trip to the careers office took him one of two ways. Being an only child, Derek befriended the radio and had ambitions from there to head to the airwaves one day to be that friend for just one other person. Back then, it was Chris Ryder (aka Caesar the Boogieman) on Kent station, Invicta FM as well as LBC legends such as Mike Allen, Mike Dickin and Robbie Vincent. He used to listen under the covers late at night (and still very much does) to speech radio. It kind of did start like that in terms of TV interest - but it was radio that Derek always wanted. He records the local news programme, 'Coast to Coast' - re-types the news script into one of the first home computers (think it had rubber keys - ZX something or other) and delivers the news back to an empty bedroom. Now, sit back - and get ready to hear the story of a boy that never could make up his mind what he wanted to do!ġ973 ARRIVAL: Well, the journey begins in 1973 (I know, it can't be possible you say!) down in the garden of England in Kent (a little town called Westerham - famous for being where Churchill had his home at Chartwell).ġ983 In a bedroom in Westerham, there is a dreaming child watching the local ITV channel, TVS in Kent. Welcome - and thanks for coming in for a little read. Whenever he can't tell you something on-screen he says 'It'll be in the book'. He is now toying with the idea of bringing the many other elements of his story together one day in a book. ![]() He lives in North Yorkshire, enjoys driving (good job really) around the UK and spending time either in the garden or near the sea with as much sunshine as possible. Perhaps you peeps on here could fill in some gaps with different information I'm not aware of.Derek is a popular, cheeky and busy presenter on the UK's sales TV channels. Of course he also is entitled to his own privacy and maybe isn't with Victoria anymore but why tell lies? I have often thought Gems and TJC are in cahoots somewhat but they both claim they are the largest company supplying gemstones etc to the viewing public. It didn't inspire me with confidence about his remarks about the costs of gold etc. A very blatant lie and does he really think the viewing public would not remember him from years ago. So I was very surprised to hear Craig say last night that he had just had his first child that we might be able to hear in the background. I never heard any announcements on why she disappeared and of course she is entitled to her privacy. She went to America to help set up Gems Tv there but came back after it's failure and was around on screen until perhaps a couple of years ago, possibly around lockdowns. He was married to Victoria who also was a presenter at Gems and they had a daughter several years ago. ![]() I remember him well from Gems Tv years ago. Was watching TJC last night between 11 and 12 and was surprised to see Craig Norris talking from America. ![]()
